- Yesterday, I attempted to install a 28.8 data/fax modem in a friend''s
- 386-20 running Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0. The modem was pre-configured for
- COM4, IRQ3. I didn't think about resetting the jumpers for a different
- COM/IRQ configuration, especially since that is the same config as the
- modem in my own 386-20 w/ Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0 uses. Both systems
- utilize COM1 for the mouse. As usual, there were COM/IRQ conflicts when
- I attempted to get online. Undaunted, I began to massage the COM/IRQ
- settings thru Windows (Ports) utilizing the ol' trial and error method.
- After a few unsuccessful tries to get both mouse and modem to work
- properly at the same time (ever mindful that COM4 needed IRQ3 for the new
- modem) I ran into major difficulties.
-
- Apparently, older 386 boxes configure COM2 as a serial port for interface
- with the keyboard. When I booted up with my latest try at workable
- COM/IRQ settings, I received an error message "KEYBOARD error - user
- check!" Then Windows came up as usual. However, I now had NO INPUT
- DEVICE (keyboard or mouse) operating. After several re-boots with minor
- attempts to correct the problem, I finally concluded that I was really
- jammed up. Aha, I thought, I'll just boot up with a DOS system disk,
- thereby bypassing Windows. That should get the keyboard back. Then, at
- the DOS prompt, I'll go into the Windows system.ini file and change the
- COM/IRQ settings back to something recognizable. Alas, no joy! Same
- error message, and then the DOS Setup screen came up. However, that
- screen requires F3 or RETURN to proceed, and I was still locked out,
- account no input device.
-
- I got out my DOS and Windows books and desparately began to explore other
- possibilities.
-
- It seemed that I might be able to go home and use my computer to make a
- new system disk with a modified autoexec.bat or or config.sys file. If I
- added a MODE command to these files, I could reconfigure the COM ports at
- bootup. However, the DOS 5.0 Mode command dosen't have any provision for
- changing the IRQ settings for the COM ports. That seems to be the crux
- of the problem; changing the IRQ settings, especially for COM2
- (previously configured as a serial INPUT port for the keyboard). Can the
- ctty command be of any help to me, I wonder?
-
- I know that someone out there in the ether has the answer to my problem,
- and your help will be greatly appreciated (especially since this is my
- boss' box that I crashed).
